Western China is one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been lucky enough to visit. The city or Urumchi is a mix of Chinese and indigenous cultures, somewhat lost in time, where we rarely saw other Europeans. It bizarrely exists with two overlapping time zones in the same city, which are a confusing 3 hours different. As we ventured out into the surrounding villages, it became even stranger, but also staggeringly beautiful. The area is now largely closed, and the Uyghur people oppressed – this is my tribute to them; people like us, just trying to live their lives.
